The Peaceful Stag dancer reenacted the popular legend of the
deer that was tamed by, and found refuge with Milarepia, the famous 11th
century Tibetan hermit, poet, and saint. In portraying the legend, the dancer
wore a silk dress (shamthab),a richly embroidered white brocade
robe, and a naturalistic white stag mask. He held a golden dorje in his right hand—a symbol of wisdom and compassion for all
non-enlightened beings.
