The Peaceful Stag dancer reenacted the popular legend of the deer that was tamed by, and found refuge with Milarepia, the famous 11th century Tibetan hermit, poet, and saint. In portraying the legend, the dancer wore a silk dress (shamthab),a richly embroidered white brocade robe, and a naturalistic white stag mask. He held a golden dorje in his right hand—a symbol of wisdom and compassion for all non-enlightened beings.
