Two-Story Outhouse

Two-story outhouses had the upstairs facilities that were situated a little further back so the “materials” released from the second floor would fall behind the wall of the first floor. There are a few of these old “relics” still around. When the snow gets so deep in winter, the bottom story is covered by snow, and then they used the top story.

The crescent moon cutout and the star cutout on the door of many outhouses went back to Colonial times, in a time when few people could read. The crescent moon cutout was for women and the star for men.
