Description and Meaning
Hieroglyphs are characters used in the pictorial writing of people long ago. The Greek word means, “sacred carving”. Even though people often think of it as Egyptian writing, hieroglyphs are also found in Hittite, Mayan, and Cretan cultures. It took many years for archeologists to figure out what the Egyptian writing meant. After finding the Rosetta Stone that had three different eras of writing, all with the same message, people were finally able to interpret some of the more ancient writing. The stone was carved in 196 BC but not found until 1799 CE.
