Position Title: Curator of Collections and Exhibitions
Reports to: Executive Director
Schedule: 35 hours per week, Tuesday–Saturday, primarily during the core hours of 10:00AM–5:00PM. Additional hours may be required for special events and programming.

Classification: Part-Time, Hourly
Compensation: $20-$21 per hour

Position Overview

The Curator of Collections and Exhibitions is responsible for overseeing the Global Village Museum’s collections and exhibitions programs, leading the Museum in following best practices to provide high-quality educational and cultural programming to the community. This position will manage permanent collections and related policies and procedures, as well as develop and implement a diverse schedule of temporary exhibitions and permanent collection rotations in collaboration with guest curators from the community.

Primary Responsibilities

Collections Management and Curation

  • Curates the Museum’s permanent collections and permanent collection galleries, researching the current collections and prospective gifts to ensure alignment with the Museum’s mission.
  • Acts as collections manager for the Museum’s permanent collections, maintaining proficiency in current best practices and laws for collections care and collections issues, training staff, interns and volunteers accordingly.
  • Facilitates access to the Museum’s collections for guest curators, student researchers, and the public, both physically and digitally.
  • Collaborates to write grants supporting collections and exhibition needs, such as conservation, facilities updates, and supplies.
  • Serves as the museum’s public facing representative for collections, acquisitions and conservation.

Exhibitions Program Management

  • Manages the Museum’s Special Exhibitions program, soliciting exhibition proposals from volunteer guest curators across the community that prioritize first-person perspectives.
  • Trains guest curators in curatorial practice, ensuring that exhibition subject matter is mission-centered and aligns with best practices for museums while providing a valuable and organized experience for the curators.
  • Leads installation for exhibitions, ensuring that all collections objects and loaned objects are handled and installed safely.
  • Works towards aligning the Museum’s exhibitions program with all current AAM standards.

 

Qualifications 

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • College-level education or equivalent work experience in Art History, History, Anthropology, Museum studies, or a related field.
  • A passion for promoting cultural heritage and diversity.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of individuals in a collaborative capacity.
  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Detail-oriented and ability to work independently.
  • Experience in museum collections care, including storage, documentation, object research, accessioning/deaccessioning, cataloging, and database administration.
  • Experience in curating and installing exhibitions.
  • Comfortable working over one year in advance with ability to accommodate unexpected opportunities for exhibitions and other programming.


Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Advanced degree in Art History, History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, or a related field.
  • First adopter of new technologies and approaches, always looking for new solutions to recurring issues.
  • Experience recruiting and managing volunteers and interns.
